Mars joins largest CEO-driven commitment on workplace diversity to further advance equality and inclusion


At Mars, we know that a diverse work force inspires creativity and innovation, which is essential for us to succeed. That’s why we are absolutely committed to cultivating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

On July 25, 2017, we signed up to the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity in the workplace: the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™.

Only collective action from the business community can help to reduce bias, improve hiring and retention of employees from diverse backgrounds, as well as increasing creativity and productivity.

“Pledging to be a part of the CEO Action on Diversity and Inclusion initiative makes perfect sense for us,” said Grant Reid, Chief Executive Officer and Office of the President. “We’re deeply invested in having a work environment that enables our Associates to thrive by being themselves. This fosters diversity of perspective, creativity and empathetic leadership, and makes us a stronger business. Joining others in a collective effort to advance diversity and inclusion gives us a chance to learn from others and improve our own efforts, while being part of a movement that can have a beneficial impact on society.”

Along more than 270 industry leaders, including the likes of Walmart, Target and Kroger, as well as companies like Hershey and P&G, we have signed a pledge to -

  1. Work to create trusting environments within our companies
  2. Implement and expand unconscious bias training within our organizations
  3. Agree to share best practices and unsuccessful practices around diversity and inclusion

That’s an easy and natural commitment for us thanks to the environment we foster, says Michelle Thomas, our Global Director of Inclusion & Diversity. “We’re already working on these three actions, so we can only stand to gain by learning from others and sharing our best practices,” she says. "This is a fantastic way to show our commitment and hold ourselves accountable for progress on diversity, both internally and externally.”

At Mars, we take diversity seriously. Last year we were named as one of the 2016 Best Workplaces for Diversity and were listed on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2017 Corporate Equality Index. We also have women in over 40% of our managerial positions at Mars, and we provide mentoring circles like the Women of Mars Associate Network to give Associates a chance to meet and share advice.
